Why won’t my phone accept a QR code?
If your phone refuses to scan, open, or “accept” a QR code, the problem is usually one of three things: your camera, your settings, or the design of the QR code itself. The good news? Most of these are easy to fix.

- Poor QR design: Low contrast, tiny size, over-stylised or damaged codes are harder to read.
- Glare and blur: Reflections on screens, dirty lenses, or shaky hands stop the camera locking on.
- Network or security blocks: If the link is unsafe or blocked by corporate filters, nothing will appear to happen.
How to fix it when your phone won’t accept a QR code
- Clean the lens and improve lighting. Wipe the camera, move to brighter light, and avoid glare on the code (especially on screens).
- Adjust distance and framing. Start around 15–25 cm away, centre the QR in the frame, and move slowly until it looks sharp.
- Check camera settings. In your phone’s Camera settings, ensure “Scan QR codes” (or similar) is turned on.
- Test a known-good QR. Try scanning a simple, black-on-white code (for example, from a trusted generator on another device).
- Use a dedicated QR app. On older phones, install a reputable, ad-free scanner from the app store and try again.
