What is the smallest scannable QR code?
QR codes can be surprisingly tiny – but below a certain point, even the best phone cameras will struggle. The real question is not “what’s possible in the lab?” but “what’s reliably scannable in the real world?”

How small can you go before a QR code stops working?

How to choose the smallest QR code size that still scans
- Start with how it's used, not the designer’s eye. Will people scan from 10 cm away on packaging, or 1–2 metres away on signage? Size should follow the real scan distance.
- Use a simple sizing rule. As a rough guide, aim for a minimum QR size of about scanning distance ÷ 10. For a 1 metre viewing distance, that’s around a 10 cm code.
- Keep the data light. Use short URLs or dynamic QR codes so the pattern stays less dense and easier to scan at small sizes.
- Export at high resolution. Use vector formats (SVG, PDF) or high-res PNG, and avoid stretching or compressing the image in layout tools.
- Test on multiple phones. Try newer and older iOS and Android devices, in both bright and low light, before you sign off the artwork.
- Err on the side of “slightly bigger”. If you're on the edge of what's possible, a few extra millimetres will save failed scans and support tickets later.
